“Capitães da Areia” retrata a vida de um grupo de rapazes abandonados com idades entre os 4 e 14 anos, que crescem nas ruas da cidade de Salvador, Bahia, vivendo num trapiche abandonado. A obra mostra não só os assaltos e as atitudes violentas dos integrantes do grupo, mas também as suas aspirações e os seus pensamentos ingénuos, comuns a qualquer criança. Conceptualmente, quis representar na capa a densidade não só do grupo, mas também a do personagem principal e líder dos capitães: Pedro Bala. A ilustração do seu perfil recortada permite-nos observar uma espécie de gráfico relacional, em que cada ponto simboliza uma criança e as linhas representam as suas relações com os outros elementos do grupo; os pontos (as crianças) conectam-se entre si (ou não) e independentemente de quantas ligações são criadas entre os pontos exteriores, todos os pontos estão conectados num ponto central: esse ponto representa o líder dos capitães. Na contracapa encontra-se uma breve descrição do romance (retirada da edição de bolso da editora Europa América, que serviu de inspiração para o trabalho) e o código de barras ilustrado como o suporte do trapiche.

“Capitães da Areia” portraits the life of a group of several forsaken young boys, between four and fourteen years old, who grow up in the streets of Salvador, Bahia, living in an abandoned trapiche (a beach structure like a pier). The book shows not only the robberies and the violent attitudes of those in the group but also their aspirations and naive thoughts, that every child has. Conceptually, I intended to represent on the cover the density of not only the group but also the main character’s, who is also the leader of the capitães: Pedro Bala. The cut-out illustration of his profile allows us to observe some kind of relationship graphic, which point represents a child and the lines represent their relationships with the other elements of the group; the points (the children) connect with each other (or not) and no matter how many connections are made between the exterior points, all of them are connected to a central point: that point represents the leader of the capitães. On the back cover exists a brief description of the novel (taken from the pocket edition of the editor Europa América, which this work is based on) and the bar code illustrated as the ground prop of the trapiche.
